Protect yourself at all times. Know who you are dealing with on anything financial before handing over cash or credit. Here's some helpful information:
1. Check references. If you have to do so - check 5 or 10.
2. Check the web. Google the person's name. Google the person's company.
3. Check Facebook. Find out how the person acts, how they live their lives.
4. Ask for a police report.
5. Check public records and find out if there are issues.
6. Check the person's credit report.
7. Check trade lines.
8. Check phone book listings.
9. Check schooling records.
10. Check forms of identification (driver's licenses, social security cards).
These issues may be able to explain a lot about who someone is. But, please remember, there are always two sides to every story. Don't be afraid to talk things out and get an "explanation" from the person or company you are investigating. While this is a good start for doing an investigation, please remember that the information you find may or may not have a valid counter view.
